BOWERS AFTER-HOURS: THE DESCENDANTS: AN EVENING WITH KAUI HART HEMMING
Friday, May 11, 2012 6 PM- 9 PM
The Descendants, an extraordinary film set in Hawaii, starring George Clooney as a father struggling to better parent his daughters in the wake of a family tragedy. The film has recently won this year's Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. The writers, Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon, and Jim Rash have based their work on the novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings. Join us for a special event hosted by the Bowers Museum in support of the Surfing Heritage Foundation, based in San Clemente, as the guest of honor, Kaui Hart Hemmings, speaks about her book. Kaui will be introduced by her father, First Hawaiian World Surfing Champion and retired Hawaii State Senator, Fred Hemmings.
Kaui grew up in Hawaii and has degrees from Colorado College and Sarah Lawrence College. A former Wallace Stegner fellow, she now lives in Hawaii. The Descendants is her first novel and is being published in nine other countries. She is also the author of House of Thieves, a collection of stories. The evening includes a reception, an exclusive viewing of the Bower's permanent exhibition, Spirits and Headhunters: Art of the Pacific Islands, live music, program, and book signing.
